Itinerary
Day One
At 7:00 am start riding from Keys Hotel and heading towards Himo town through Taifa road, 28 kilometers from Moshi town. The route is tarmac road with a lot of traffic.
At Himo take a break for refilling water bottles and get some energy bars.
Continue ridding to the Taveta border (Kenyan and Tanzanian Border) which is 10 Kilometers from Himo Town. The route is Tarmac with much-reduced traffic. A few meters before the border you will go left towards the route that leads to Lake Chala. It is 14 km from the lake here. The route is rough with gravel and rocks and is dusty all the way to the lake. Lake Chala is a crater lake in a caldera at the border between Tanzania and Kenya, located 52 km from Moshi town. Lake Chala is said to be the deepest inland water body in Africa with a depth of about 3 km. Chala is an untouched part of a truly ancient land where you can feel the real taste of Africa.
At approximately 6 to 7 kilometers to the lake, the vegetation changes to the evergreen forest that is host to many mammals like baboons, dik-dik, Antelopes, and different species of birds. It is 4 hours riding from Moshi town to Lake Chala.
On reaching the lake we will have a picnic lunch, then we will rest for some time before descending down to the Lake. At the lake, you can enjoy canoeing. Kayaking or just relish the beauty of African nature. Dinner and overnight at Lake Chala Safari Lodge.
Day Two
Day Two: Lake Chala to Marangu / Moshi | 78 Km
After breakfast at 07.00am you will start riding from Lake Chala to Marangu village then to Moshi. Today’s ride will be challenging as you ride up to Marangu village in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. As you cycle through Marangu village you will pass banana and coffee plantations along the way as well as the friendly Chagga people who will be waving and shouting “Jambo!” as you cycle by.
Visit the iconic Kinukamori waterfalls where you can stretch your legs and walk down to the base of the waterfalls. While here, a local Chagga guide will give you a brief history of the area, the people, their traditions, and customs as well as the mystical legend about the waterfalls. After spending some time refreshing by the waterfalls you will be wrapping up your last day of cycling by traversing the villages and Plantations on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The first half of the ride will be comprised of several steep ascents and descents followed by a second half which is a gradual downhill ride towards the bustling and vibrant Moshi Town. You will cycle through the suburbs and outskirts of Moshi as you head towards the Keys Hotel which marks the end of your incredible 2 days journey around Mt. Kilimanjaro, on two wheels.
